Emerging Aboriginal tourism ventures given helping hand
Emerging tourist ventures run by local Aboriginal people will be given a helping hand with specialised centres guiding their growth in Darwin and Alice Springs.

There are already more than 80 Aboriginal businesses Territory-wide offering a range of services, from basic bush camping to luxury safari style accommodation.

They also charter tour operators and run fishing tours.

NT Tourism Minister Kon Vatskalis yesterday predicted a rosy future for home-grown talent after the government announced $1.2 million in Commonwealth funds for two Indigenous tourism hubs.

The centres - established in Alice Springs and Darwin - will help emerging operators run their operations.

'Over the next three years the new hubs will provide practical support to emerging businesses to improve their administration and marketing activities,' said Mr Vatskalis.

'The hubs will also facilitate access to business and financial administration training and capacity building to develop Indigenous tourism operations into self-sustaining, viable businesses.'

A centre already at work in East Arnhem Land had seen business support provided to six Indigenous tourism businesses including accommodation providers, cultural day tours, extended cultural tours and cruise charters, Mr Vatskalis said.
